Editorial Style
Date
December 2024
Location
Sandown, Isle of Wight
Sandown Seafront located on the Isle Of Wight, what was once the island's most beloved seafront. I visited the island for this project to document derelict state of the location, and also during my visit i spoke to local residents of the area to get feel for what is is really like.
So why did i decide to choose a project like this?
I have been visiting the Isle Of Wight, especially Sandown since my childhood. Having got Family living on the island, i visited the Island many times, and noticed the decline of the seafront, and its worse over last 15 years. I can remember Sandown 15 years ago on a Holiday visiting Family, where it was thriving with people, amusments and rides open, hotels and restururants open, and not forgetting the Sandown Pier which again was busy. There must a problem when, several news companies have articles on the area,
What was the Visit like?
I was shocked when i visited Sandown over December 2024, some might say its winter, but it's a Christmas period. The pier was empty, Hotels abandoned, no tourists to be seen - just local residents, Abandoned Construction sites, buildings in need of desperate repair. The Amusements on the seafront that i can remember 15 years ago, now are built on with flats. I even went across to Shanklin another seafront a couple miles from Sandown, and the amusements were heaving, and cafes/resturants open, this is clear the decline
